The Reminiscence
I walked on the well-trodden path
My gaze distant, as I recall the past.
The first day of school, the new teacher’s wrath;
The amazement to see your confident smile.
The belief in your gait
And that stylish hair style.
I walk on forward
And let the wind tease my hair.
Lifting my face heavenward,
I see the stars twinkle
And am reminded of the sparkle in your eyes as you joked with your peers
That tinkling laugh that sounded so sincere.
The stuttering request I made
To become your friend
Never knew that all of it was a game for you to pretend.
I watch the silvery moonlight shimmer on the rosebuds
As they sway lightly to their lazy tunes;
Just as I had danced on your fingers, like a blubbering fool.
Had bared my soul and shared my secrets
And then watched them fly through the air
As the latest piece of gossip.
I noticed the glittering drops on the ground, the residual rain
Which brings forth the memory of the tears I shed in vain
For the friend I never had
But yearned for, in my heart
Something you knew, and took advantage of
To break me apart.
Today, so many years later
The pain is not there.
But the scar still lingers,
To remind me of that horror and despair.
